About Democratic Republic of Congo
Congo is a green country right at the heart of Africa. It is full of friendly citizens who are making a remarkable recovery from recent wars that brought their country on its knees. [Congo Safaris and Tours]
It’s surface area of 2,345,408 square kilometers (905,567 sq mi) qualifies it as Africa’s second largest country after Algeria. It’s possibly the most endowed tropical country in the region. Why? It has almost all precious minerals you can imagine, inclusive of oil, gold and silver. No other country in the world has a larger reserve for Colton than it.
However, what really makes Congo one in a million is the unmatched gorilla tracking experiences it offers.
It is endowed with both lowland and mountain gorilla species. The latter can be tracked in it’s UNESCO World Heritage site, Virunga National Park. Here, you will find a population that constitutes 604 of the world’s critically endangered Mountain Gorillas, 1004. The rest of the 400 live in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park.
The extra wow factor with Virunga is that it is Africa’s oldest national park and covers 7800 Km2(3000square miles). It is made of tropical rainforests, dormant and active volcanoes, Savannah and swamps. Here, the trek to see the gorillas is mostly an uphill task, through a bamboo and forest zone that is synonymous with 264 tree specie— and 230 plants that are endemic to the Albertine Rift. [Congo Tours and Safaris]
You will hike through a route with soaring mountain ranges that offer spectacular views! There are no set paths, as the resident gorillas continuously move in search for food. To this effect, the ranger guide leading your group will clear foliage to make the path using his machete. Depending on the pace of your group, you will walk for 15mins-4 hours before finding the gorillas. On finding them, you will spend an hour with them, which is incredible. The guides will tell you what you can and cannot do while in their presence.
Gorilla permit fare
Gorilla permits costs $400 for non-Congolese, $150 for Congolese Nationals and$250 for nationals of Southern African Development Community such as Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Eswatini, Tanzania, Madagascar, Seychelles, Malawi, South Africa, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Angola .
You can crown you visit to Virunga National Park with a day’s hiking experience at Niragongo. It is a beautiful stratovolcano with one of the world’s largest lava lakes. [Congo Gorilla Trekking Safaris Tours]
The lava lake is spectacular and beautifully lights up the sky with its orange glow at night. There is a basic wooden cabin/hut above cloud level where you can stay as you marvel at the waves of lava and listen to its roars. The view, the smell and the sound of the lava boiling down in the lake is a real treat for the senses.

You might be nervous before your visit to Congo. The information online paints a pretty dangerous picture of country.
However, you will feel unbelievably safe the whole time you are there. When you step into the capital, Kinshasa, you will realize that the country is no longer recognizable as the war-ton place it was 20 years back. It is a modern, thriving nation with happy people who are proud of their progress.
