Detailed Itinerary: 6 Days Rwanda Congo Safari

Day 1 – Arrive at Kigali airport

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will met and greeted by a Umoja Motherland tours driver guide who will transfer you from the Airport to your hotel in Kigali for -/+15 minutes.

Overnight at Hotel Five to Five

Day 2 – Transfer to Tchegera Island

Today our Driver guide will meet you and transfer you to Lake kivu which is around 10 Minutes from the center of Goma Town and take a boat cruise to Tchegera Island.

Tchegera Island is found on the northern shore of Lake Kivu which is shared between Rwanda and Congo. It is one of the best, yet least known destinations in Congo and offers perfect relaxation and exclusion.

While there, you can choose to lay back and relax on the beach or check out other parts of the Island using a Kayak or Paddle board – all available at Tchegera island tented camp. Bird viewing on the island is great and the most common birds there include heron, cormorants, African eagles and gulls.

On a good clear night, you will enjoy amazing views of the red-lit sky by the lave glow from Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes and with that reflecting on the lake’s surface, it becomes totally magical! The day light offers captivating views of the lake and the four Volcanoes in a picturesque setting.

Day 3-Transfer to Goma in Congo 

Your guide will transfer you the border you will be transferred to DR Congo at the Virunga National Park through north western Rwanda crossing around the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Arriving at the Goma – Gisenyi Boarder, you will go through the border formalities and proceed to Virunga National Park at the Kibumba Camp through the Goma town the old Colonial Mineral town in Eastern DR. Congo that lies on the shore of the Lake Kivu.

Day 4 – Full Day Gorilla Trekking in Virunga 

Wake up for early morning breakfast and at around 6:00 AM, we head to the Bukima Park Ranger station. The drive to Bukima from Goma will generally take around 2 hours. Today, your gorilla trek is sure to be the highlight of your tour. We will be at the Kinigi ranger station by 7 am, where we are allocated guides and briefed before heading into the forest. We will track one of the Six habituated Gorilla groups in Congo. Move in a company of experienced ranger guides through the forest while searching for mountain gorillas. Only eight people are able to track each habituated group. Time is taken while searching for these great apes, rangers between 2 to 6 hours depending on the movement of the gorilla groups as their territory can range up to 40km. The park rangers and guides will clear the way and assist you through the forest. Once the gorilla group is located you will spend an hour with them as they feed, rest and play.

Day 5 – Transfer to Nyiragongo Crater 

Leave your Lodge at 08.00am to head to Kibati, the main base for the hike to the Mount Nyiragongo one of the active volcanoes. Arriving at Kibati ranger station, you will get a briefing and by 10:00 am you will start hiking, you can get porters to carry your luggage. Nyiragongo is 3,470m and it takes between 5 to 6 hrs to get to the top because of the magma Nyiragongo Volcano is located in the east of Congo, at around 19kms from Goma town.

It is the most active volcano in the world. In 1997 and 2002, flows of lava broke out from cracks in the slopes. They covered 17kms to Goma in just a few minutes, killed dozens of people, and left hundreds of thousands homeless. The eruption temporarily drained the lava lake in the summit crater; volcanic gas suffocated heather forest on the upper slopes. Now the forest is recovering, and the wildlife is coming back. The climb takes 4 to 5 hours; there are a lot of rare birds and small mammals along the trail.

Day 6 – Transfer to Kigali for your Flight Back Home/Destination 

Descent from the Nyiragongo – Transfer to Kigali, Early morning, you retrace your steps down the volcano and to the starting point which takes around 3 hours. On arrival at the Kibati starting point, you will board your vehicle and drive to stop over at a Hotel in Gisenyi/Rwanda for refreshing a bit, have lunch and later transfer to Kigali international Airport in due time for your out bound flight.
